So I became an aunt on Saturday and while I knew that day was going to happen eventually I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. My brother, who is now a proud papa, is four years younger than me. And when I heard that he was about to enter fatherhood I thought, “Seriously? This BOY is about become somebody’s father?”
This is the same boy who thought it would be funny to go after a beehive with a baseball bat. The boy who nearly broke his neck jumping off the deck into the kiddie pool. The same kid who has lost his wallet, cellphone and book bag more times than I could count. He’s the kid who came home from school once without shoes. Shoes!
But as I walked in to the hospital room and saw him grinning down at the baby girl in his lap I thought, “Wow. He’s not a little kid anymore. He’s somebody’s father.” He acted like a father. Ordering everyone in the room to wash their hands before they touched her. He bounced her when she fussed. He even changed her diaper twice. It took him forty minutes and he made a huge mess but he did it. And it kind of made me smile. He’s actually growing up.
Then there is my other brother who is a year younger than him. He has a real job with a salary and benefits. He has a commute. He complains about taxes. Somehow when I wasn’t looking he became an adult too.
And my baby brother who is in college now. He actually says insightful things now. We had a real adult conversation about a paper he wrote for his English class. Don’t get me wrong, the kid still thinks passing gas is the FUNNIEST thing on the planet, but he’s growing up.
We all are and it made me realize that life keeps changing, we keep growing even when we aren’t paying attention.
