WESTERN DESERT, Book Two in The Chronicles of Lily Carmichael trilogy, takes off where WANING MOON ends. Genetically enhanced sixteen-year-old Lily Carmichael, and seventeen-year-old Will Callahan embark on a journey across a sun-ravaged and decimated U.S. in the year 2057, bound for the Western Desert on a dangerous rescue mission. The survivors they meet along the way put Lily’s healing abilities to the test and challenge Will’s resolve to find his missing father—no matter the cost. But even with the burden of life and death on their shoulders, and the Industry hot on their trail, the greatest challenge they face is trusting their hearts to each other.

How to Indie Publish Your Book (part 2) – The Launch

Hi!  J here.  As the next part of my Indie Publishing Your Book series, I’m going to tell you what I should have done once my book was available.

You need to launch your book onto the world.  It’s not enough to just post on Facebook that you’ve written a novel and expect to sell zillions of copies.  Sorry, it doesn’t work that way.

Now I was a novice and I didn’t know that I needed to launch my book, nor did I know what that entailed.  But, I’ve done some digging around, asked published author friends and done some planning of what I’m going to do next time.  So here’s my Launch To Do list.  Maybe you can share secrets with me for a change.

  1. Get your cover art prepared well in advance of the launch to create promotional items and begin building some buzz about your book.
  2. Create a book trailer…ditto the buzz.
  3. Market your upcoming books along with your current titles whenever and wherever you can.  Sell multiple products at one time, instead of one product at a time.  Thanks Jennifer Fusco of CTRWA for that piece of advice.
  4. Create buzz on your website, your Facebook fan page, your blog (the sequel to The Cordovan Vault {currently available at Amazon among other places} called The Peacock Tale, will be launching in the fall of 2011), in your Tweets, on your YouTube Channel and any other venue you can participate in.
  5. Send advance copies to reviewers who can hype your new book for you on their blogs etc, reaching a vastly broader audience than you can on your own.

As you are getting those things in place, decide on a launch date.  I don’t know if it’s possible to get your books out onto Smashwords, Amazon, Createspace, B&N ahead of your launch date and somehow make them private, so that you can just flip a switch (so to speak) on launch day and make them available.  I’ll find out in a couple of months.  But if not, you’ll have to get them out there ahead of time so that you can have copies handy for sale and available on all the other venues on launch date.  You are NOT going to be able to upload it, in its multitude of files, to all the places you want it to be on launch day.  Don’t worry; most likely, you aren’t JK Rowling yet, so you won’t have to worry about your story being leaked on the Internet if somebody buys it early.  Seriously, I’d like to have that problem.

  1. Have a “Countdown to Launch” event online where you are stirring that buzz to generate excitement about launch day.  Thanks to NYT Bestselling author Kristan Higgins for that one.
  2. Consider having a launch party for your books ‘come out’.  This could be a fun, inexpensive event at a local library or Indie bookstore.
